“If you could fight anyone who would you fight?”
PhaseOne
Vital Techniques Interview
What music influenced you as a kid, and what influences you today?
We’ve both had a lot of musical tastes growing up, from hip-hop and grime to rock and metal. Wasn’t until we we’re introduced to drum & bass until things got really interesting though!
How did you get into production?
Antix: I started out producing when I was like 15 so that me and my mate could spit lyrics and make tracks together, on basic programs like hip-hop ejay. Really enjoyed the creative process but wanted more control over what I was doing so moved onto reason, and then onto Logic which we use today.
Vecta: And I started just from seeing what my brother was doing and being interested in it. Started learning the basics and teaching myself and just moved onwards and upwards!
What would we find in your in your studio?
We have Apple Mac desktops, Logic 9, Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 interface, Behringer Truth B2031A active monitors, Mini-Nova synth, Oxygen 8v2 keyboard,
Studio Projects C3 condensor mic w/stand, pop shield and reflection shield.
How do you go about writing your tunes? Do you usually start with a specific element?
Usually always drums. Just seems to be the way we’ve always worked. Seems a good starting point seen as they’re the backbone to the track!
Unless its remix we might start with some chords to go with vocals or something but other than that drums.
Best show you’ve ever performed at?
Outlook Festival 2012. Was the sickest week ever. Amazing to just be there, but to play as well, a few times, was incredible.
So good to be going back again this year to repeat the madness!
What artists are you really feeling at the moment?
Loving what Disclosure are doing, love their sound. Everyone on our label Second To None Music is killing it right now, especially love the Enigma Dubz and Drapez vibes that are dropping, watch out for that stuff! Antiserum is making some good music. And Scrufizzer, a big MC here in the UK and defo someone making waves right about now. And got to say Defenders of Style and Dialect are killing it right now. Hip-hop and grime straight out of Leeds city, make sure you check em out!
What have you got planned for the rest of the year?
Keep smashing out the music and working hard! Got some big gigs lined up including our labels EP promo tour 50Hurtz in Amsterdam with Badklaat and Disonata, we got Parklife and Outlook as well… roll on summer!
We’ve also just started our own event here in Leeds, Adapt. With the launch happening next month, featuring garage legend DJ sticky, Hench badman Lost plus more! Looking forward to rolling forward with that project and seeing what happens!
Favourite alcoholic beverage?
We’re both whiskey drinkers so its got to be Jack Daniels and Coke.
One song you wish you had written?
Oooow, thats a tricky one. How about ‘I wish it could be xmas’ just for the big fat royalty cheques every year!
How would you blow $1million in 24 hours?
Drugs, booze and partying in America!
All time favourite childhood TV show?
Had so many! Tom and Jerry, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, Pokemon, Kenan and Kel, Dexters Lab… the list goes on and on!
And finally, Tacos or Burritos?
We don’t have much of them in England ya know! Gotta say mixed kebab in a naan, chilli sauce an the lot!
AV IT!

Transforma Interview for Drop Dem Records
When were you first introduced to dubstep?
I first heard dubstep back in 2010 when one of my brothers showed me Mt Eden - Sierra Leone haha. Will never forget that day!
What music influenced you as a kid, and what influences you today?
Well as a kid I discovered that wonderful instrument (Guitar) and started playing in several different kinds of bands for years. So the likes of Metallica, GnR etc but I always had a secret love for EDM haha. As for today there are a number of producers/musicians I draw influence off but for dubstep i’d have to say Skism for number one influence in dubstep.
How did you get into production?
I used to play around with Fruityloops back in the day with one of my brothers. But it wasn’t till the end of 2011 that I had purchased Ableton, started making tunes and got hooked on it in no time.
What would we find in your in your studio?
At the moment a nice big desk, 2x KRK rokit ‘8 inch monitors, Stanton monitors, macbook, m - audio MIDI mini keyboard, set of decks & mixer. Definitely investing in building it up more though.
How do you go about writing your tunes? Do you usually start with a specific element?
Usually I start with making my drums followed by melodies and basses and go from there.
Depends what type of tune I am making I guess as different genre’s have different structures :)
Best show you’ve ever performed at?
The cave at Chinese Laundry in sydney by far! Room was packed out by 15 minutes into my set. Shit was insane!!!.
Also closing after Emalkay last year at Clubhouse in Canberra was pretty intense as well. Went into that one with so much energy haha.
What artists are you really feeling at the moment?
I am getting more and more into midtempo lately so i’d have to say Koan Sound, Opiuo, Savant, Synchronice are some of the artists im really vibing.
But i am really digging the work of Au5, Rogue, PhaseOne, hydraulix & all the aussie homies too!
What have you got planned for the rest of the year?
Ive got a few things in the works, writing my debut EP which is going to be a FREE release at the moment. A few remixes, some new Barrel of Monkeys material. Expect a busy year from me thats for sure. And hoping to play a bit more around the country this year too :)
Favourite alcoholic beverage?
Lately it has been Jameson Irish Whiskey haha
One song you wish you had written?
End of days by Delta Heavy that’s one mean tune!
How would you blow $1million in 24 hours?
Cars would be one weakness haha.
But also I would probably throw one massive party (bigger than Project X)
All time favourite childhood TV show?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for sure.
And finally, Club or Festival?
Clubs are fun but I would love to see what it’s like playing in a festival environment :P

BLAH BLAH BLAH 2012 - SET TIMES
Blah Blah Blah has announced their second, 2nd Round Headliner, the notorious… SCRIBE!
The superstar of New Zealand’s much celebrated Hip Hop scene returns! Responsible for the Australian Platinum (New Zealand 5x Platinum) album, “The Crusader”, which sporned chart topping hits, “Not Many” and “Dreaming”, and the follow-up album, “Rhyme Book”, Scribe was a pioneer of his craft. He single-handedly put New Zealand Hip Hop on the map in the early noughties, blazing a trail of destruction through the music scene that was heard across the globe from London to Russia. At home, the reception of his debut album was resounding, as he became the first and only New Zealand artist to occupy the Number 1 spot on both the Singles and the Album charts simultaneously. “The Crusader” sold Gold on its first day of release and Platinum by the end of its first week, making it one of the fastest selling New Zealand records to date.
